Clicker training is an indisputably powerful training tool. There are examples of the power of clicker training all over the web now, one only has to search "clicker training horses" on YouTube to see countless displays of horses offering amazing amounts of behavior.

Much of the success of the use of clicker training in my program is due to the fundamental idea that if the horse has choice and is moving towards something it wants, one can expect a favorable and desirable outcome.

You can expect that a horse will do everything in its power to create the very behavior I'm hoping to shape. There is mutuality in our training agreement that replaces the need for pressure.

SHAPING

A big part of the process of getting and teaching my horses and those horses I work with, is to offer behavior, and it involves shaping. For training horses, shaping is a wonderfully creative, kind and generous way to get behavior. Imagine a horse actively seeking a way to improve how he picks up a lead, or imagine a horse who is trying very hard to stop more quickly when he is asked. How many people would love to see their horses "self-correct" some of the behaviors we're trying to teach. That is where shaping comes in.

If you'd like to learn more about shaping and constructive applications of the techniques, please come visit my online courses and ongoing study groups. If you want to see examples of shaping in action, check out some of the videos I have posted. Almost all of the behaviors you see in action were taught through shaping.

if you'd like to read more stories and training ideas of people who are exploring this amazing opportunity to learn about horse training, visit my training group on FB.
